- Cloudcroft: a pasture for the clouds
- Established by Charles Fisher Eddy and John Arthur Eddy of the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad.
- The Pavilion was the first structure (built in 1899) followed soon after by The Lodge.
- The rail arrived in 1900
- The Lodge burned down in 1909 and was rebuilt in 1911
- The Lodge hosted Judy Garland, Clark Gable, and Pancho Villa (as well as every New Mexican governor). In the 1930s, The Lodge was managed by Conrad Hilton.
- Passenger service ended in1938 and the last freight train rolled in 1947.

- San Andres Limestone (Permian) is at the surface of Cloudcroft, is about 350 feet think in the Cloudcroft area. The San Andres consists of olice-gray or light-to-dark-gray and brown limestones with sharp bedding planes.
- Underlain by the Yeso Formation (Permian), which is the source of groundwater in the area. The Yeso is 1,200 to 1,800 feet thick in the Cloudcroft area and consists of limestone, gypsum, shale, siltstone, and minor amounts of sandstone. Springs issue from the Yeso in Fresnal Canyon west of town.
